In four months, Europe has seen two major terrorist attacks carried out by ISIS that have left 175 people dead and hundreds more injured. Last week it was Brussels and back in November it was Paris. The State Department even issued a travel warning for the entire continent of Europe recently.
This heightened alert has caused travelers to reassess their summer travel plans to Europe. And, many more are taking a second look at their travel insurance coverage. But now, people are starting to ask more and more questions about their policies regarding terrorist attacks. One of the leading travel insurance comparison sites, Squaremouth, is reporting a shift in the types of questions its customers are asking because of the recent terrorism in Belgium.
“We’re continuing to see an increase in questions about travel insurance from people who are nervous about their trips because of terrorist attacks in popular European vacation destinations,” said Squaremouth Customer Service Director Jessica Harvey.
Generally speaking, if your current travel insurance policy includes terrorism coverage, then you may be able to cancel your trip if another terrorist attack occurs, according to Squaremouth. But, the company warns customers that they must meet the following criteria:
So, what if you want to cancel your upcoming trip to Europe because of the recent attack? Well, according to Squaremouth, you can’t cancel your trip to Europe just because a travel alert has been issued. It’s “simply not a covered reason to cancel your trip on a standard travel insurance policy.” That is, unless you have the ‘Cancel For Any Reason Ugrade’ provision. But, it’s not too late to purchase a travel insurance policy that covers you in Europe and includes cancellation coverage for any future terrorist events.
